Magdalena Carmen Frida Khalo y Calderón nació el 6 de julio de 1907 en Coyoacán, México. Era la tercera de cuatro hijas del matrimonio de Matilde Calderón y Guillermo Kahlo. A los seis años enfermó de poliomielitis lo que provocó que su pierna derecha adelgazara. Una enfermedad que ella intentaba ocultar, de joven bajo pantalones, más tarde bajo largas faldas mexicanas. Su padre, fotógrafo de profesión, le enseño a utilizar la cámara, revelar, retocar y colorear, lo cual le sería útil para su pintura.En 1922 se matriculó en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. Le interesaban las ciencias naturales, biología y anatomía, y deseaba ser médico. En la escuela era miembro de un grupo apodado "Los cachuchas", quienes se identifican con una gorra de traficante. Era un grupo interesado en la literatura y con ideas social nacionalistas. De sus filas saldrían más tarde varios líderes de la izquierda mexicana.En 1925, Frida y su amigo Alejandro Gómez Arias sufrieron un accidente al chocar el autobús en que viajaban con un tranvía. Frida pasó tres meses en cama y al año le detectaron una vértebra rota lo que exigió el uso de corsés durante nueve meses. Como tenía que pasar dias en cama con movimientos reducidos empezó a pintar. En su cama se instaló un caballete que le permitía pintar recostada y comenzó a pintar su primer cuadro, el retrato de una amiga. Luego al tener un espejo cerca pudo verse a sí misma y pintar sus autorretratos. Más tarde diría: "Me retrato a mí misma porque paso mucho tiempo sola y porque soy el motivo que mejor conozco". Primero fue realista -retratos de amigos y familiares, flores-; después, a causa de la intensidad de sus sentimientos y de un cuerpo destrozado, pintó más y más su propia imagen combinada con expresiones oníricas a veces brutales. Parte de su obra incluso se ha asociado a tendencias surrealistas.
En 1929 contrajo nupcias con Diego Rivera, de quien se divorció en 1940 para volverse a casar con él un año después. Fue maestra de pintura en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas, y miembro del seminario de Cultura Mexicana. En 1938 montó su primera exposición individual en la Julien Levy Gallery de Nueva York.
Algunos de sus trabajos fueron incluidos en la Exposición "Mexique" de 1939, en la Galería Renou et Colle de París, así como en diversas colectivas a lo largo de su vida en México. Participó en la Exposición Internacional del Surrealismo organizada en 1940 en la Galería de Arte Moderno en la capital de México. Instituciones de la importancia del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York y Georges Pompidou de París cuentan con obra de la pintora.
